November 7, 2020 – National Play Outside Day | National Bison Day
It’s Time To Head Outside and Play. And If You Happen To See Our National Mammal, Speak Softly!
Welcome to November 7th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate playing outside and a national mammal.
Hey Marlo, It’s National Play Outside Day and you’re actually here in Vegas. Does that mean you’re gonna go take a hike? Okay, I know you don’t like to be tracked down on the weekends, but no matter where you live, there’s no excuse to stay inside on the first Saturday of November. Come rain or shine there are plenty of outdoor activities that are great for dusting off those mental cobwebs and taking a break from screen time. Get outside, breathe some fresh air and if you throw in some playtime with family even better. If we were in your neck of the woods we may even spot the other thing we are celebrating today, eh Marlo?
The majestic bison can weigh in at nearly 2000 pounds making it the largest land mammal in North America. According to Native American legend, there was a great famine long ago and the chief of the Lakota tribe sent out scouts to hunt for food. They encountered the White Bison Calf Woman, who taught them religious rituals and told them that when she returned, harmony would be restored to the world. As she left, herds of bison surrounded the camps and the animal became an important part of tribal culture. Though the bison was nearly extinct by the late 1800s, today it can be found in all 50 states. In 2016, it was declared America’s National Mammal and on National Bison Day we celebrate this essential part of our nation’s history.
