May 5, 2020 – National Astronaut Day | National Teacher Appreciation Day

Transcript for May 5th

Welcome to May 5th, 2020 as we bridge the social distance on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate “looking up” while looking back and the heroes who never give up on our kids. Let’s join Anna Devere for more on today’s celebration.

If you were not alive on May 5th, 1961 to watch Astronaut Alan Shepard board the Freedom 7 Space capsule for the very first 15 minute orbit at over 116 miles above the earth, chances are good that you can still feel the excitement of this moment.  That’s because no matter how old you are or how you spend your time on earth, “Space Inspires.”  On National Astronaut Day we celebrate the pioneers like Shepard and many others who were willing to risk it all to go first.  We know that our kids will reach new frontiers and today we honor that heroic spirit in us all that believes that anything is possible!

We encourage you to learn more about Higher Orbits, a nonprofit run by Astronaut Trainer Michelle Lucas who brings space camp to kids with her Go For Launch! program. Higher Orbits needs your support today on Giving Tuesday. Visit nationaldaycalendar.com for more on how you can donate to this truly inspirational program.

Speaking of heroes, we give a shout out today to those special folks who always go the extra mile to make a difference to our kids: our teachers. Everyone can appreciate the unique challenge they have faced to help our children stay focused while inspiring their love of learning.   On National Teacher Appreciation Day celebrate those who do their work come rain or shine for the simple reason that they care about kids as much as you do!
