June 27, 2020 – National Sunglasses Day | National Ice Cream Cake Day
Transcript for June 27th
Welcome to June 27th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate keeping your cool. More after the break from Marlo Anderson.
Sure sunglasses are useful, and thanks to the Vision Council we know they are important in protecting our eyes from harmful uv rays. But there’s a reason this day is so popular: sunglasses are the very essence of chic. The easiest way to accessorize and make a fashion statement. One look at Tom Cruise in Ray-Ban Wayfarers tells you why we still copy their style today. You don’t have to be a pilot, to turn heads in a pair of gold-rimmed aviators. And if rose colored glasses express your point of view then go ahead show your style on National Sunglasses Day.
On Memorial Day weekend of 1929, Tom Carvel was driving his ice cream truck when he got a flat tire. He pulled into the parking lot of a local shop and watched helplessly as his frozen goods began to melt. Making the best of things, Carvel tried to sell the slightly melted ice cream to passersby and low and behold the softer texture was a huge hit! That day as he sold out his entire stock the idea for a soft-serve machine was hatched and it wasn’t long before he opened a permanent store. The name Carvel became synonymous with two things: “soft-serve” and “ice cream cakes,” which, if you grew up in New Yorker, you’ll remember as Fudgy the Whale. On National Ice Cream Cake Day celebrate the winning combination of our two favorite desserts and thank goodness for flat tires.
