June 12, 2020 – National Jerky Day | National Red Rose Day

Transcript for June 12th

Welcome to June 12th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar.  Today we celebrate a power packed snack and the deeper meaning of a favorite flower.  More after the break from Anna Devere.

Anna: A South American tribe called the Quechua preserved meat by drying and salting it. They’d cut the meat into strips and store them for dry seasons when food was scarce.

Marlo: Borrrrring.

Anna: What? That’s really rude. You’re being a jerk.

Marlo: So? It’s National Jerk Day.

Anna: No it’s not. It’s National JERKY Day. That’s why I was talking about the Native Americans drying meat to preserve it. They invented jerky.

Marlo: Well, I’m sorry. I read it wrong. Honest mistake.

Anna: Whatever… Jerky.

Marlo: ”A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”

Anna: That’s a quote from Romeo and Juliet and it’s not even about roses. She’s saying that she could marry Romeo if it weren’t for his last name. Their families hate one another and that means they can never be married.

Marlo: That makes sense. But if this quote isn’t about roses, why are we talking about it?

Anna: Because it’s National Red Rose Day and what else is there to say other than they’re beautiful flowers and they sell like hotcakes on Valentine’s Day?

Marlo: (pause)  Okay. That makes sense. Did you know that the colors of roses implies a certain meaning and that when you give them as a gift you should be aware of what they may be saying.

Anna: I did know that.  Red roses are meant for expressing love and romance.  So what color roses are for saying I’m sorry, I’m a jerk?

Marlo: No idea.
