June 1, 2020 – National Heimlich Maneuver Day | National Penpal Day
Transcript for June 1st
Welcome to June 1st, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate small acts with a big impact. More after the break from Marlo Anderson.
It’s tough to say how many lives have been saved by the procedure developed by Dr. Henry J. Heimlich in 1974. Some estimate that abdominal thrusts, otherwise known as the Heimlich Maneuver have been successfully performed over 50,000 times. This technique is so simple to use that even young people, with very little training have been able to save choking victims. And perhaps most remarkable of all is the fact that Dr. Heimlich did not use it himself until he was 96 years old, when he was able to save a woman in his nursing home. On National Heimlich Maneuver Day we celebrate this life saving technique and the man who invented it.
It’s important to let the people we love know how much they mean to us and that’s especially true at the moment. We have bridged the gap with our loved ones via calls, texts, and countless video chats. But if you want to give your correspondence that personal touch, try composing a handwritten letter. While it may feel outdated, a physical letter has the quality of permanence because it can be read and reread many times. If you’re not convinced of your own way with words, just imagine the smile on the recipient’s face when they open the mailbox and see something handwritten from you. On National Penpal Day celebrate the big impact of a simple gift from the heart.
