Welcome to July 4th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate the spirit of freedom and picking up the spare. More after the break from Anna Devere.
While most Americans gather to enjoy great food and fireworks and some form of party decked in out in red, white and blue, it’s interesting to know that this holiday has been celebrated in much the same way for nearly 250 years. The first anniversary of our adopting the Declaration of Independence included a 13-gun salute, one for each State of the Union, along with parades, fireworks, speeches and prayers. The next year George Washington issued double rations of rum and Benjamin Franklin and John Adams hosted a party in Paris with fellow Americans. But the most unusual celebration included a mock-funeral for George the III, symbolizing the end of the monarch’s hold on America. No matter how you celebrate Independence Day remember you are in good company and a long line of revelers who continue to believe in the Spirit of Freedom.
Today we also celebrate the food that makes grownups reach for a little kid cover up – the barbecued spare rib. While everyone has their own take on sauces and rubs, Kansas City, Missouri, is considered the BBQ capital of the world, with restaurants like Arthur Bryant’s and Jack Stack drawing visitors from around the globe. And if you can’t make it there, don’t stress. Plenty of us boast our own secret sauce that makes wearing a bib worth all the “ribbing.” On National Barbecued Spareribs Day celebrate the freedom of the finger food that makes a beautiful mess.
