July 27, 2020 – National Scotch Day | National Crème Brûlée Day

Today’s Celebrations are the Essence of Smooth.

Welcome to July 27th, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a sip of class and the essence of smooth.  More after the break from Marlo Anderson.

Whiskeys get their distinctive tastes from the distillation process or the type of barrels in which they’re aged. In the case of Scotch whiskey the flavor comes from peat taken from bogs and marshes around the Scottish countryside. Peat gives Scotch its unique smoky flavor. And the level of smokiness depends on the time the barley grain is exposed to peat smoke during the 30 hours it dries before being distilled. Meant to be sipped from a glass, or even paired with a fine cigar, Scotch should be savored. So if you’re in the mood for a “sip of class” pour yourself a dram and celebrate National Scotch Day.

And speaking of smooth, nothing is silkier than crème brûlée.  It starts off with cream that is steeped with vanilla, sugar and egg yolks that all end up in a warm bath that is baked to perfection in the oven.  With a crisp, caramelized sugar shell, this creamy custard has been an elegant finish to any meal since 1691.  My signature cupcakes include a nice dollop of crème brûlée nestled in the center of a chocolate cupcake and topped with raspberry mousse.  Someone dubbed this flavor World Peace cupcake.  Maybe I should share the recipe on National Crème Brûlée Day.
