July 2, 2020 – National Hot Dog Month | National Anisette Day
Transcript for July 2nd
Welcome to July 2nd, 2020 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate the tried and true along with something completely different. More after the break from Marlo Anderson.
Coney Island, New York is home to Nathan’s, the world’s most famous hotdog place. It opened for business in 1916 and kicked off an event that still happens every year. Nathan’s July 4th hotdog eating contest draws a crowd from around the world and even features an old-time carnival barker, who announces each contestant as if they were prizefighters. The reigning champion is Joey Chestnut from Kentucky, who holds the world record for eating 74 hotdogs in just 10 minutes! During National Hot Dog Month celebrate this All-American favorite, and if anyone gives you grief for eating for more than one, just tell ‘em you’re training for Coney Island.
If you are a fan of black jelly beans you will love the flavor of today’s celebration National Anisette Day. This licorice flavored liqueur gets its notable taste from aniseed and enjoys most of its popularity in Spain, Italy, Portugal, and France. It is also a bit sweeter than most other liqueurs which makes sense given its history as a medical concoction. Apparently, even the ancient Egyptians believed that a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down. And if that’s not appealing to your taste in a cocktail, why not try it in coffee or cookies or cake. National Anisette Day is a great excuse to celebrate trying something new!
